6/30/13

State #36, June 30, 2013: Connecticut, Glastonbury

Run #37 (DC and 36 states), Saturday, June 30, 9 a.m
5th Annual InterCommunity Firecracker 5K
And at the bottom of the post: Washington Nationals at New York Mets, June 30, 2013, GrandSlamTrip Baseball Game #12

At the registration, I ran into Dan whom I met at the Fargo 5K.

Dan, who lives in Bristol, Connecticut and works for ESPN, is also trying to run a 5K in every state, although on a longer timetable. He has completed about 10 so far. It was great to see him again.
Our Fargo, North Dakota picture in May.

The day started with the 200 yard kids run.

How bout this girl and her dad

Then the 5K...

Just before the start, I heard someone yelling Walter.
This is Roberta who grew up in Hartford and now lives in Glastonbury.

I met her in 1975 at the Sammy Davis Junior Greater Hartford Open when I was caddying for a friend from Dallas. Roberta was in charge of the caddys, and the first thing that she said to me was that I could not wear shorts. I would have to take them off.
Roberta was the youngest delegate to the 1972 National Republican Convention and she seconded the nomination of Spiro Agnew for VP.

Although we are FB friends, it had been over 30 years since I have seen Roberta.

5 seconds after our photo, the horn sounded to start the 5K.

And the finish line

And here comes Dan

My time was 25:28 which was 44th of 150, and 2nd in my age group.
For this, I was awarded the 2nd place trophy.

It was great to see Dan again and amazing to see Roberta again.

Washington Nationals at New York Mets, June 30, 2013, GrandSlamTrip Baseball Game #12

After the 5K, we drove to CITI Field in Queens to watch the Nationals play the Mets
We got into the game in the 2nd inning in time to see the Nats score 4 runs.

The Mets could do little offensively, and there was a lot of conversation on the mound as the Mets changed pitchers 5 times. After the Nationals scored 11 runs, the Mets let their catcher pitch so not to use any more pitchers.

This is when we left for Manhattan.
Final score: Nats 13, Mets 2.

State #35, June 29: New Hampshire, Plaistow

Run #36 (DC and 35 states), Saturday, June 29, 9 a.m

33rd Plaistow Old Home Days 5K
This is a vintage wonderful town fair with a 5k.

Flag sister Aemy. She grew up in Morgantown, West Virginia (where we were 2 weeks ago), she lived in Atlanta (where we were on MLK Day), and she can speak with almost any accent you like.

Ready to run...

And we are off...

About half way

Near the finish

25:08, 78th out of 367, outside of the top 3 in my age group who all ran over 2 1/2 minutes faster.

This is Kevin server of the best New England BarBQ.

A wonderful town fair and 5K
